Carolina Day School announces Tauni Butterfield as new athletic director
After a highly competitive process, Tauni Butterfield has been selected to fill the role of Director of Athletics at Carolina Day School. She will assume the role on July 1, 2021, filling a vacancy left by current Director of Athletics Steve Henry, who will be promoted to the role of Associate Head of School.
Butterfield has 35 years of experience in middle and high school athletics as a teacher, coach, and athletic director.
“Tauni brings tremendous, directly pertinent experience from her long and successful tenure at Greens Farms Academy, where she and her team have turned the school into a regional athletic powerhouse,” said Stephanie Whitney, Head of School for CDS. “She is known to be a positive and energetic leader, one who sets the bar high, and supports students on their quests to be their best selves. A decorated coach, Tauni has also been recognized at the District, State and Regional levels for Sportsmanship and Leadership, and we are excited to watch her do the same here at Carolina Day.”
Butterfield comes to Carolina Day from Greens Farms Academy (GFA) in Connecticut where she served as Director of Athletics and Physical Education, overseeing all of the local daily operations and the administration of the athletic department. This included the coordination and direction of an interscholastic athletic program of more than 30 teams and 8 recreational activities and oversight and administration of the PK-4 Physical Education program. Butterfield has also been heavily involved in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts at GFA. Prior to her role at GFA, she served as Director of Athletics and Physical Education at Christian Heritage School in Connecticut. Her coaching experience includes volleyball, basketball, soccer, and tennis, and she was the recipient of the Western New England Soccer Association Coach of the Year in 2012.
Butterfield has served on several athletic league committees, including the Fairchester Executive Committee, and in leadership positions with the Western New England Soccer Association, New England All State Soccer Selection Committee, and the Fairchester Athletic Association.
She earned a Master of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Southern Connecticut State University and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Health and Recreation from King’s College (NY).
“I am so excited to be joining the Carolina Day School community,” said Butterfield. “I’m looking forward to working with great coaches, committed student athletes, and the athletic staff as we partner together to make the CDS athletic experience the best it can be.”
