LOWER SCHOOL SPORT PROGRAMS
Our Lower School "Play for Your School" athletic program provides younger students with an athletic experience that promotes skill development, healthy competition, and fun in a supportive environment.
To offer this instructional and competitive experience, in the fall and spring, we partner with the Asheville Buncombe Youth Soccer Association (ABYSA) for competitive soccer. Students practice right after school one day a week on campus and play on Saturdays at various locations in Asheville. We also partner with Asheville Shield Football Club for soccer skills clinics. Registration information will be sent to Lower School families at the start of the season.
Our athletic program also offers Lower School Skills Clinics, where lower school students receive instructional opportunities to be introduced to various sports throughout the school year by our varsity and middle school coaches. Information about upcoming sport clinics will be sent out alongside athletic sign-ups.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND UPPER SCHOOL SPORT PROGRAMS
In fifth grade, we begin to introduce our students to a traditional athletic experience. There are daily practices, team expectations, and students begin to learn to manage their time. Our upper school program is competitive but remains mission aligned. We work to encourage a deep understanding of how teamwork, preparation, and reflection impact an outcome.
All US and MS teams will be formed via placement tryouts at the end of the team’s pre-season period. Final placement is decided by the coaches based on skill and ability of the athlete.
FALL
WINTER
Spring
^ 8th graders are welcome to try out for JV or Varsity sports, but placement on one of these teams will depend on skill level and expected playing time.
**These sports are offered to middle schoolers as combined teams with the Upper School athletes. Per NCISAA rules, only 7th -12th graders are allowed to compete at the Varsity level. If a 5th or 6th grader is part of a Varsity team, they will be a practice player until they become eligible to participate in competition.
Non-competitive Athletic Offerings
WILDCAT SPORTS FITNESS CLUB (GRADES 6-12)
The Wildcat Sports Fitness Club is an after school, outdoor training experience open to grades 6-12. The training sessions focus on introduction, correction, and expansion of the following athletic skills: strength and conditioning, speed and agility, balance and coordination, cardiovascular endurance, plyometrics, resistance training, and cross training.
CAROLINA DAY SPORTS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM (GRADES 8-12)
The Sports Management Program is a club for students interested in the “behind the scenes” of athletics, especially those interested in a career in sports management. It is open to students in grades 9-12 and is not limited to student-athletes. The club welcomes anyone with an interest in assisting a specific team or the Athletic Department throughout the year. Manage a team, help make important decisions about school spirit and athletics, and collect volunteer hours!
UPPER SCHOOL SPORTS MEDICINE INTERNSHIP
In 2020, the Sports Medicine Department began accepting interested 9th - 12th graders as Sports Med Interns to provide interested students with a hands-on Athletic Training experience. Students selected for the seasonal internships work alongside the Athletic Trainers to learn basic first aid and sports medicine skills that they practice with CDS athletes. The program teaches basic first aid, sports taping techniques, physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises, and concepts of orthopedic anatomy and physiology. In addition to collecting volunteer hours, the students selected for the internship also have the opportunity to become First Aid/AED and CPR certified. Students who excel in the program may have the opportunity to further their experience by shadowing a team doctor from Emerge Ortho over the summer.
